One of the many challenges men have is to decide what kind of workout they want to do to get a sexy six pack. One of the fears that many men suffer from is that they will work out for months on end and never see any results, or go back to the old way of doing things. So the question is, what are the best ab exercises for six pack abs?

The best way to explain this is to talk about what NOT to do. With that in mind, I’ll not talk to you about the top 5 mistakes most people make when they are trying to get ripped six pack abs, so you can save yourself the time and energy, by not making the same mistakes again.

Mistake #1: Imitating bad workouts you find on TV. This is a probable reason why you will not be able to burn the belly fat fast. Inexperienced people think that doing some simple workout, like they do on TV is the answer, because they have ripped abs and sexy bodies, and don’t know any better. What they don’t know is that most of the workouts on TV are ineffective and they actually got the abs working out the REAL way, and eating the RIGHT way.

And in fact, one of the WORST ab exercises you can do is the regular, repetitive crunch or sit-up. When you do this exercise you are not adding enough resistance to your stomach, and you are not burning belly fat efficiently either. (You should go behind the scenes and see them really work out! You’ll a totally different workout routine!)

Mistake #2: Trying to get ripped by only working out your abs. This is not the most effective way to burn belly fat! You want to keep a gradual increase in resistance and difficulty for your abs. That’s how you build size, which is what makes them come out from behind your belly fat.

So what ab exercises should I do? There are hundreds of exercises that are better for building abs. Some of them include doing a classic mountain climber, or doing the plank for 1 minute. You must also incorporate pull-ups and dumbbell squats. These exercises keep your metabolism high and will allow you to burn fat even after the exercise.

But the bottom line is that many, many people will need to do something different from what they are doing now in order to get the most out of their workout routine.

Mistake #3: Think that because you purchased some type of exercise machine will make you get ripped abs, just because you have it. The magis is not in the machine, the magic (if any) is in the workout done by YOU, regularly, on the machine, and eating right.

Mistake #4: Being weak minded. Thinking that you can get a six pack without working hard is a myth. It does require a fair amount of exercise and work. You cannot get a six pack by wishing or thinking about it. You actually have to RUN, do the PUSH-UPS and replace fast food with broccoli soup! But if you are able to do these things, you’ll start to see a ripped midesction in less than 12 weeks!

Mistake #5: Thinking the hardest exercises are the best ones. You don’t need to do some crazy, advanced, upside down workouts in order to get the ripped six pack abs you want. The best ab exercises are simple, effective and fun. Just do the normal ones, with the exception of crunches and sit-ups, they don’t work to well!

Hard ab exercises is a waste of time. They are frustrating, hard to do and often kill your motivation to continue, since you can’t do them properly. It’s about building strength and having good form, not winning the academy awards of crazy ab workouts.

Please help :]
I’ve looked at websites and everything, but I’d rather just have someone
tell me. And, I get the whole “eat a balanced meal and exercise”, but
maybe you can be a little more specific? Like, eat this or this in the
morning, run for 20 minutes, etc.

I’m going to California in May. So, I have about a month. I’m not
looking to lose 30lbs of anything, but I want to get as toned as possible. I’m willing to do anything [that's healthy].
I run everyday [not A LOT] and do some ab and leg workouts,
but I want something that will work fast.

I’m 16, if that matters at all.
I really want to get into better shape.

Check out Ellie Krieger’s book “Simple Changes, Big Results.” You can get it for at amazon.com or you can go to your local bookstore. She is a Registered Dietitian from Food Network (Healthy Appetite). Her book lays out in simple terms what is good for you and what should only be eaten in moderation.

Since you already workout more than is laid out in her book, it will mainly be just a nutritional guide for you – but I take it that is what you really need right now. Of course, she does lay out the exercise program for you pretty well, I guess you could start at like week three since you already workout some and that would give you a GREAT workout plan for toning up quickly.

If it is impossible for you to get it, then just email me through my profile and I will try to give you some basics until you can get the book. It is a little too much information to lay out here…lol.

All of these abdominal exercises do not burn belly fat and some of them are even dangerous!

1. Sit-ups

Sit-up is the most popular and yet, the worst abdominal exercise. Why is it so? When performing a sit-up, the ilipsoas muscle often does the majority of the work while the abs are not optimally recruited.

The ilipsoas muscle originates on the lower back. The sit-up pulls on the lower back with each repetition, especially when the feet are held down or anchored, or the repetitions are performed quickly in a jerky manner. Too many sit-ups can result in strength imbalance between ilipsoas muscle and abdominal, poor posture and lower back pain.

2. Crunches

Crunches are another popular ab exercise, but they do not get rid of belly fat or develop six pack abs. Doing too many crunches, too often, can be harmful. Whenever you crunch, spinal flexion causes compression of disks between your veterbrae. Over-crunching can lead to hunch back (poor posture) and herniated disc (lower back pain). This can be compared to someone rounding his back without bending knees when picking up something from the floor, and thus hurting his back.

3. Torso twists or machine-based twisting exercises

Contrary to what many people believe, torso twists, either with stick or machine, and side bends with dumbbells, do not get rid of love handles or burn belly fat. Hence, they are no good for reducing the waistline and are not effective for developing obliques.

4. Machine-based ab exercises

Like any of the above mentioned exercises, you don’t lose belly fat or develop sexy abs by working with ab machines. Typically, machines with grabbing handles on the side or in front of your body for support are ineffective. As you become tired, you tend to use your arms and lower back (prone to injury) to perform the abdominal exercise while leaving out your abs. As the machine stabilizes the body, your stabilizer muscles are not trained to work together with other core muscles. Excessive use of ab machines can lead to strength imbalances and injuries.
